Northern lights dance above the Sundhnúkagígar crater row during the fourth eruptive episode of Iceland’s Svartsengi volcanic system. For a few hours, fast lava flows cast a warm glow into sub-Arctic air, a rare convergence of auroral light and volcanic fire. This was among the last aurora nights before summer brightness returned; by then, new lava fields had already reshaped roads and ridges. In Iceland’s high latitudes, such moments reveal the fragile rhythm between atmosphere and geology, where beauty and transformation unfold within the same northern sky.
