Icelandic Elements

Northern lights dance above the Sundhnúksgígar craters during the fourth eruptive episode of Iceland’s Svartsengi volcanic system. For several hours, fast lava flows cast a warm glow into the sub-Arctic air, a rare convergence of auroral light and volcanic fire. This was one of the last aurora nights before summer brightness returned; by then, new lava fields had already reshaped roads and ridges. At Iceland’s high latitudes, such moments reveal a delicate choreography between atmosphere and geology, in which beauty and transformation unfold together.
