A Powerful Beginning
Eruption of Svartsengi volcanic system, Island, 2024
Category - Polar Regions
This image shows the powerful onset of the seventh episode of the 2023–2025 eruption of Iceland’s Svartsengi volcanic system, on 21 November 2024. As with the previous events, the eruption began along a fissure several kilometres long, producing extensive lava flows. In this case, a 2.5 km lava flow was spreading from an eruptive fissure about 4 km long visible in the background. The effusion rate for this event was estimated at around 1,500 cubic metres per second, resulting in a rapid lava advance during the first hours.
