Soupfin Sharks

Over the past century, the global population of soupfin sharks (Galeorhinus galeus) has declined by nearly 90%. This should come as no surprise, given their unfortunate name. These sharks have made their way into cuisines and supplements all over the world, from the UK, to China, to the Canary Islands. In 2025, there was an unusually large aggregation of these sharks off of La Jolla, in San Diego, southern California, one of their prime habitats in the U.S. Surrounded by hundreds of these animals slowly cruising through the kelp forests, it was hard to feel even a sliver of fear for them. How rare it must be to see so many of this critically endangered species in the same place.
