Swimming among Stars
A juvenile flying fish and its reflection, Florida, 2025
Category - Ocean
Blackwater diving is the practice of diving at night over deep water (~200m) in order to see creatures that would normally be difficult to find or live too deep to see otherwise. It can be hit or miss, but on this night we drifted into a surface slick: an oceanographic phenomenon where there is a section of smooth surface water where drifting life collects. Mixed among the sargassum and decaying plastic, I saw this juvenile flying fish mirrored against the surface. The particulate--which could have been tiny plankton, eggs, or plastic--created the illusion of a starry sky.
