Baboo, a tiger (Panthera tigris) rescued from the pet trade in Pakistan, looks out of his travel cage as he is transported to a sanctuary in South Africa. Rescued as a cub from the exotic pet trade, Baboo was treated for osteopenia and malnutrition at the Margalla Wildlife Rescue Centre in Pakistan. A year later, this photograph was taken as he began his journey to the Isindile Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa, captured here at the moment of departure. While living in Pakistan, I often visited the rescue centre, documenting their work and watching Baboo recover. His story reflects the human desire to possess wildness, and the toll it takes on animals caught in the illegal trade.
