The Bird Man of Bhutan

Bird Sherub, as he is affectionately known, is Head Researcher at the Ugyen Wanghuck Institute for Forest Research and Training in Bhutan. As the foremost naturalist in Bhutan, he has spent more than three decades studying birds, and other animals. On the image, part of a photo report taken on assignment for WWF, he organizes hornbill skulls and skeletons as part of his dedicated efforts to research and protect these iconic animals. Hornbills hold a significant place in Bhutanese culture, symbolizing strength and resilience, but they are increasingly at risk due to habitat loss, hunting, and other human pressures. Through his research and conservation initiatives, Sherub plays a crucial role in raising awareness and fostering community-driven solutions to protect these majestic species. His work is a testament to the importance of preserving Bhutan’s rich biodiversity for generations to come
