The Bird Man of Bhutan

Bird Sherub, as he is affectionately known, is Head Researcher at the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Forestry Research and Training in Bhutan. As the foremost naturalist in Bhutan, he has spent more than three decades studying birds, and other animals. In the image, part of a photo report produced for the WWF, he is organising hornbill skulls and skeletons as part of his efforts dedicated to the research and protection of these iconic birds. Hornbills (Bicerotidae) hold a significant place in Bhutanese culture, symbolising strength and resilience, but they are increasingly at risk due to habitat loss, hunting, and other human threats. Through his research and conservation initiatives, Sherub plays a crucial role in raising awareness and fostering community-driven solutions to protect this majestic species. His work is a testament to the importance of preserving Bhutan’s rich biodiversity for generations to come.
