Caring for the Unseen Giants
Giant armadillo’s paw, Pantanal region, Brazil, 2023
Category - Change Makers: Reasons for Hope

The hind leg of a young giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus), approximately one and a half years old, is held by biologist Gabriel Massocato, the fieldwork coordinator of the Giant Armadillo project. For the past 14 years, Gabriel has dedicated himself to protecting this species through extensive scientific research. Alongside the Giant Armadillo project team, which includes ecologist Arnaud Desbiez and veterinarian Danilo Kluyber, Gabriel works tirelessly to raise awareness of this elusive species. The project is managed by the Brazilian Wild Animal Conservation Institute (ICAS). This picture is part of a photo documentary on the conservation and life of Giant Armadillos based on a 15-day expedition to one of the most remote areas of the Pantanal.
