Sniff
Invasive aquatic weed detection exercise, Australia, 2022
Category - Change Makers: Reasons for Hope

On Beaufort Lake (Beaufort, Victoria, Australia) border collie conservation detector dog Raasay undertakes kayak training with her handler Tracy, to sniff out invasive aquatic weeds such as common cordgrass (Spartina anglica). Conservation detector dogs like Raasay can sniff out the scents of animals and plants that humans often can’t easily find - on the surface, underground, or even in water. Raasay is also trained to detect the carcasses of bats and birds on wind farms, and can often navigate terrain and conditions that most people would find difficult or impossible, covering in just a few minutes what one person could take several hours to survey.
