A Hammock in the Jungle
Chimpanzee in the forest, Uganda, 2022
Category - Into the forest
In Kibale National Park, Uganda, we came across a large family of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) feeding on a fig tree. High up in the tree, they were difficult to observe, but when we moved around, a young male followed us into the forest. He stayed with us for two hours, quite close to the group and was willing to be photographed. Located in the west of the country, Kibale National Park is classified as a "protected forest reserve". The chimpanzees, considered to be "endangered" according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, are protected here from the main threats they face in the wild, namely poaching and the disappearance or fragmentation of their habitat, mainly as a result of agriculture and the development of human infrastructure.
