Raising awareness of monarch butterfly conservation among young students, Mexico, 2019
Category - Change Makers: Reasons for Hope
Moises Acosta, a local guide and environmentalist from Zitácuaro, uses toy models to explain the different stages in the life cycle of the monarch butterfly to the students of a local school in Michoacán, Mexico. Environmental education is one of the cornerstones of the conservation strategy for the monarch butterfly. However, most efforts have been focused on the communities along the migratory route in the United States and Canada. Mr. Acosta founded the Papalotzin Environmental Education Center on the outskirts of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacán to fill that gap and to raise awareness about the importance of the monarch butterfly among the younger generations that visit the sanctuaries during the wintering season.
