Burial of a Giant, 2020

Category - Humanity versus Nature

A dead whale shark (Rhincodon typus) killed by non-selective fishing gear and thrown away to avoid persecution by the authority is lifted with heavy machinery for burial at a dumpsite after the necropsy was conducted on Tarutao Island, Mu Koh Tarutao National Park, Satun, Thailand. Although the whale shark is legally listed as a protected species in Thailand and many other countries, fishing gear that does not distinguish between species still poses a major problem for the survival of these large marine mammals, whose species is now listed as “Endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and whose global population is declining.
