Coexisting with Sea Level Rise, 2022
Java, Indonesia
Category - Humanity versus Nature
Abdul Latief, 62, has worked as a fisherman for 37 years. Since the sea has penetrated inland, the winds have strenghtened and fish are harder to find. Nowadays he spends more money on fuel for the boat than what he can earn. His house flooded for the first time in 2008 and since then he has already elevated it twice, in 2009 and 2019. In February 2022 I started a long-term project investigating the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems and coastal environments, highlighting how people adapt to survive these phenomena. I went to document the rising sea levels on the North coast of Central Java, a place hit hard by this phenomenon and by coastal erosion. Together with the local community I went to explore the most damaged places to collect testimonies about these impacts.
