Net Zero Transition (I), 2020

Kristinn Haflidason, CEO of Algaennovation, monitors one of the photobioreactors in the micro-algae production facility, at ON’s Geothermal Park in Hellisheidi. In the span of a few decades, Iceland has successfully transformed its economy, shifting from fossil fuels to 100% renewable electricity generation. Algaennovation proprietary technology for micro-algae cultivation enables a negative carbon footprint and uses less than 1% of freshwater and land areas used by conventional small-scale algae companies. The plant uses water and electricity from the nearby geothermal power plant and exploits carbon dioxide emissions in a process that turns waste to value in a sustainable manner.
