This river flows through the taiga of the Mari Republic in Russia. It is constantly fed from various sources and does not freeze, even in winter. Its water is highly mineralised (potassium-calcium sulfite-sulfate salts), which gives it a bitter taste, like seawater, and the sediments that settle in its bed are the reason for its turquoise blue colour.
