“Like a scene from a fairy-tale, a Wombat (Vombatus ursinus) wanders through a forest aglow with the light of bioluminescent mushrooms. For only a few days at certain times of the year, wildlife in this region will witness this rare glowing display put on by Ghost Fungi (Omphalotus nidiformis). Typically, the fungus relies on old, dead trees to grow, and when the mushrooms appear, they assume a relatively plain, white appearance by day and often go unnoticed by people. Sadly, this photo was taken only a short drive away from land that has recently been opened up for urban development, posing a growing threat of encroachment on remaining unspoiled habitats like these.“
